Don't recognise it !!
I've just been reading some of the old posts on the BB. Feeling rather nostalgic I thought I would have a look at "jolly old Tidders" via Google Maps. It's gone, as we would remember it. All new buildings, the village as such has changed beyond recognition. I tried to find the tank hangers but couldn't find them as they were. I tried to use Sidbury Hill as a reference point, but as it is an airial image there is no definition to the hill. I think I found where the tank hangers were, but in their place are three new buildings, very confusing. None of the old barracks are there, all demolished and bright and shiny ones rebuilt. I was thinking of driving down there in the summer for a day trip, but I think it would be a waste of time, nothing left to remember. I suppose The Ram would still be there, but that would be the only place left standing....

Roger are you talking about Tidworth????
ReplyDeleteWas at Tidworth recently and the "armoured barracks" holds 2 CR2 regiments--Royal Dragoon Guards & 2RTR sharing all facilities including the Tank Park. The area around Tidworth may seen if STREET VIEW is available on Google earth for that location.
ReplyDeleteGraham
Yes I was referring to Tidworth. I tried to get down to street level to have a look around, I think this level of view is restricted due to the nature of the locality. MOD site and all that.
ReplyDeleteI had same problem at Bovington Went to tank museum and tried to visualize it as it was in 58.There was a junior ldrs then and outside of old museum a first world war tank om a concrete plynth. We had our photo taken in front of it The class consisted of 1 15/19 H 1 13/18H 2 11 H 1 12LANCERS 1LIFE G AND 1 RHG plus self in 1RD

ReplyDeletedid you put in Bhurtpore Bks or Station Road .
Yes the Pub is still there and The Cemetery cant move , did you find the sports ground on the Corner
Mike,
ReplyDeleteInitially I just put Tidworth in Google Maps as a general search item, I have subsequently searched under BHURTPORE BARRACKS. The result wasn't at all what I expected. The only thing that came up for the location search was near the MOD police station. Obviously all of the barracks as we knew them have long ago been demolished.
The facilities available for the troops stationed there are now looking like a home from home.
Maybe some of the other Royals can do a search and see what they can find that they can remember, and let us know what they find.
Hi Roger whats the uniform you are wearing in your photo is it coast guard? Regards Butch Ward
ReplyDeleteWatch it Butch - think its the Secrect Polizei!!!!!

No, not the Coast Guard. I'm a Civilian Instructor with the Sea Cadet Corps. I teach Seamanship, Navigation and Comms. Strange choice for an ex TANKIE
ReplyDeleteI went in to the RNXS and was a Chief P.O.Communications Instructor right up until that not very nice Jonathan Aitken disbanded it in 1994, would have made Auxilliary Officer at the time. Just getting ready to go down to HMS. Vernon when it was announced.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed it all the while I was doing it.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy working with the kids but they can be very trying at times. Too old to become "uniformed" now but it's a good laugh at times. There are loads of courses to go away on, all over the country. I'm going on a MECHANICAL ENGINEERING course in January. That will give me a qual' to teach the basics of diesel engine repair and servicing. Trafalgar Day Parade is coming up shortly together with Remembrance Day. It is tradition in St. Albans that the Honour Guard at the memorial is always provided by the local Sea Cadet Unit, this has been going on for as long as I can remember. For those of you that are interested this is the web site for the unit that I am involved with..http://www.stalbans-seacadets.org.uk/
You might be right Don he,s keeping that one covered
ReplyDeleteButch
Thanks for enlightening me Roger I did think it was some thing nautical that you are in, its good to know that some one is doing something to get some of the young tearaways off the streets. Im sure you will enjoy your engineering course. I have just finished my working life in mechanical plant hire as an engine fitter and repairer and enjoyed it thoroughly Regards to you Roger Butch Ward
ReplyDeleteNice to know that some of you are still doing "your bit"!I think it gives one a great sense of satisfaction to do something for the land without having to be paid!!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you all have a very pleasant weekend.
