Happy New Year

May I on behalf of the admin team of the 1st Royal Dragoons site wish all our members and families a very Happy and prosperous New Year.

John Atkins

Senior Citizens

It was NOT the Senior Citizens who took:

The melody out of music,
The pride out of appearance,
The courtesy out of driving,
The romance out of love,
The commitment out of marriage,
The responsibility out of parenthood,
The togetherness out of the family,
The learning out of education,
The service out of patriotism,
The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
The civility out of behaviour,
The refinement out of language,
The dedication out of employment,
The prudence out of spending,
The ambition out of achievement, or,
God out of government and school.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from
personal relationships and interactions with others!

YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I'm the life of the party ...... even if it lasts until 8 p.m.
I'm very good at opening childproof caps .... with a hammer.
I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I am going.
I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.
I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying.
I'm very good at telling stories; over and over and over and over...

I'm not really grouchy: I just don't like traffic, waiting in long lines, crowds, lawyers, unruly kids, barking dogs, politicians and a few other things I can't seem to remember right now. I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere

I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.
I'm having trouble remembering simple words like.....
I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.

I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days, and when did they let kids become policemen? I'm wondering, if you're only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150? I'm a walking storeroom of facts.... I've just lost the key to the storeroom door.

Have a great New Year and ...
"Don't ever take a fence down until you know the reason it was put up."

Christmas Greetings

To all members: I do trust that you are having a peaceful and restful Christmas Day. May this coming New Year be one of happiness for you and your loved ones. I realise that at 'our age' we venture into the autumn of our life but I put my trust in the One who said, ' Because I live, you will live also.' The best, I feel, is yet to be for you and for me.

snow and ice

I got family living in Bournemouth he tells me he cant get out of the house because he is snowed in.& that he has had to get his bother-in -law to bring him some food ! I asked  him   how deep it was he says 4 inches. so I went out and dug my car out from under 20 inches of snow ploughed down the drive though mtr high ruts of snow & ice where the lorries  delivering to the local DIY store had been manoeuvring. drove on to the bank then realizing  that my tank was almost empty got to the filling station filled up with the last of the diesel they had  they had all ready run out of petrol and normal diesel ( it must be my lucky day ) the attendant says she can close now until the weather changes because the tankers can't get through. My relative used to be an HGV Driver.mmmmn. what ever happened to the tough guys who's winter attire used to be shorts and sting vests. who used to get though despite all adversities  I 'spose its down to the E U and health and safety rules again I was once told by an HGV driver that if he had a puncture he had to call recovery out because he was delivering foodstuffs. CHURCHILL ON ISLAM

This short speech below was written by Winston Churchill and delivered by him in 1899 when he was a young soldier and journalist.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!
Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.

The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce; and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualist deprives this life of its grace and refinement, the next of its dignity and sanctity.

The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property;either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslem's may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytising faith.

It has already spread throughout Central Africa , raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled; the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome ."

Sir Winston Churchill; (The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 London )

Reply from Multiply,regards scam Emails

Hi John,

These are spam bots that are obtaining User ID's at random. We've put some measures in place to prevent these going forward, but like with many spammers, they continually change their methods. We're still working on a permanent solution, so for now just make sure you don't click on anything in a message sent from someone you don't know, and report the user ID to customer service.

Thanks.

BEWARE..... DOWNLOADER TROJAN

Today I had a message sent to me via MULTIPLY which when I opened it downloaded a nasty.... it was sent to me by ROXIFER, if you get this in your email account don't open it.. It purports to be a WINDOWS APPLICATION and is a security/virus scanner.

If you open it, it will try to force you to download the application. As soon as it starts it will take over the control of your system and it is impossible to get rid of the pop-ups etc.

The only way I managed to get rid of it was to go in to the REGEDIT facility and erase each and every key relating to the program. If you do not know what you are doing in REGEDIT don't play around in there as you will crash your system and have to reload your operating system

PAUL STRETTON

Dear Member of The Blues and Royals Association,

The following is an extract of the foreword "Across the wire", which is the result of dedicated research by the Centre for Mental Health. The document is attached for your information and you may find it an interesting and poignant piece of work with issues that may have affected a large number that have served in the Armed Forces:

In theory we have been at peace since 1945, but only in 1968 has a serviceman or woman not been killed in action somewhere in the world during that period. The majority have been members of the regular forces, but their numbers also include members of the reserves, rightly categorised by the term ‘twice a citizen’.

Sadly, we also see and hear of young men and women who have suffered terrible disablement, following injuries from which their parents and grandparents would not have survived. These are the outward and visible reminders of the debt that the nation owes to those who literally put their lives on the line on its behalf.

However there are, equally sadly, a large number whose service results in medical conditions that are not so obvious. Throughout history the plight of veterans who find it difficult to return to normal life has been both visible and all-too often ignored. Many young people broke away from chaotic and dysfunctional lifestyles to join the armed forces, which could be accused of providing an entirely false form of existence, in which servicemen are looked after from morning until night, but then discharged, unprepared for the daily demands of civilian life. They do not want to go back to chaos, where those around them, who have not shared their experience, do not understand the nuances of what they are going through. Drink, anxiety and depression

lead too many into the hands of the criminal justice system.

Some face the additional problems of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), again nothing new, but society has changed since the days following World War I, when the British Legion established clubs in which veterans, whose families and friends did not understand what they had been through, could share experiences with comrades in arms, in other words practising, unwittingly, what is now called counselling or talking therapy. The nation

owes a debt to them all, a debt that has been inadequately honoured for too long.

WELCOME PETER WINFIELD TO THE BB

I spent part of my National Service with the Royal Dragoons in Malaya in1960-61 after being transfered from the 13/18th Hussars when they returned home late 1960 to take up a tour in Germany after they had retrained in Chieftains from the Saladins and Saracens.

This is some of the message that Peter sent to me, I am sure that he will find quite a few comrades from his time in the regiment.

MESSAGE FOR MEMBERS HAVING PROBLEM GETTING ON THE BB

As we have had new members join us on the BB recently, some have had problems getting onto the site , the first thing that you need to do once you have logged in is to right click on the page and add it to FAVOURITES so when you want to come on the BB again just go into your favourites and click on 1st THE ROYAL DRAGOONS and you should not have a problem accessing the BB, the only time that you may need to log in again is if you have deleted your cookies as this also takes out your log in details for the BB, other than that I have not yet had a problem getting onto the BB. Please give this a try and let me know if it works for you ok.

A Marines Wife Confesses
This came from a

Marines wife. It says it all:

I sat, as did millions of other Americans, and watched as the government
Under went a peaceful transition of power a year ago..
At first, I felt a swell of pride and patriotism while
Barack Obama took his Oath of office.

However, all that pride quickly vanished as I later watched 21Marines,
In full dress uniform with rifles,
Fire a 21-gun salute to the President.
It was then that I realized how far America's military had deteriorated.
Every one of them missed the bastard.

A touch of humour

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.

She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview.

"Pardon me, sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?

"Morris Feinberg," he replied.

"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?"

"For about 60 years."

"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"

"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims."

"I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop."

"I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."

"How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?"

"Like I'm talking to a fu$$ing wall."

it hurts, I might die..!!!!!!

We went for a walk today around our garden to finalise a new design, rather reminiscent william barnes uncle & aunt featured in his poem " leafy boughs a-swaying " & it was about this I was going to tell you, but I had an acident and I get no sympathy here so I'll tell you about my woes ! tongue-in-cheek.    my son laid a path in  the garden, and as usual never got around to finishing it and left an edge proud ,it wasn't a problem until to-day when he parked his car at the end of the path so we had to go around it to get to the path. yep you guessed it I didn't lift my feet high enough & tripped , There was this 100 kg rotund Orangutan flying though the air in ever increasing  momentum then I landed in a very thorny rose bush to the right my left ear in a Barbary bush the whole of my left side hit the concrete sharp edged kerb and the pavour path,it has been reported that a 9.7 on the richter scale has been recorded for ost westfalen lippe today.   a quick look at my wounds and I decided they were serious,so Memsahib was detail to get me some antiseptic creme to help dress the wounds, but half way though the great hall.AKA as the coach house she had forgotten what she was going to do & went to check on the washing machine from there to hang out the washing then to her chicken....in the meantime I was in the bathroom and lost at least 20 ltrs of blood, its the blood thinning tabs I'm on, on doing a proper exam of my ills I found that I had Broken my arm in at least 4 places. fractured my kneecap ad broken all of my ribs in my upper ribcage,I had just finished  putting on the plaster of paris casts when she remembered what she should  of been doing for me and came in to the bath and asked "Did you say you wanted a cup of tea ?

RUSSEL HAYLEY [great nephew of MAJ ERNEST HAYLEY]

Thank you for accepting my membership to the Royal Dragoon group. I have some photos of my great uncle Ernest Hayley who served with the Royal Dragoons from ~1921-1945 (approx dates as I am unsure) and you are welcome to copies, one is his enrolement picture as he looks very young with the Dragoon motif surround. I am to build up an account of his short life as he died in 1953 from what I believe had some connection to a parade ground injury involving a horse. I recently discovered he was was stationed at Folkestone in 1936 and perhaps served in Kenya at some time. Apart from that I know very little. Do you know anyone that might remember him or where I could get some info of his life in the army as I believe he had quite an eventful time in the army but my family are very vague on the details.

regards and thank you

NIGEL REEDS BOOK

To all my friends and acquaintances whom I have meet over the years. Finally my book "Beware of the Cuckoo"
is completed.

This is a story of one man's battle to create a Children's Hospice while having to deal with endless grief through loss of
his only daughter to Cystic Fibrosis, several family members and friends which in turn lead to depression.

It shows that most barriers can be overcome to achieve a dream as long as one has the passion and purpose in life.

It is available through our web site at www.walkyourowntalk.com

We are making a $5.00 per book donation to children's hospice in four countries as stated in the web site.
So for example if you live in England the donation will be given to The Little Bridge House

Enjoy the web site and of course we would appreciate your patronage and support.

Please spread the word to all your families, friends and work mates.

Regards and Best Wishes to all of you

Nigel and Jocelyn Reed.

Dear Mr Atkins

I am writing to thank you and the Ex Veterans, on behalf of Combat Stress, for your very kind donation of the television.

It was a delight to meet and welcome you to Audley Court for the presentation of the television on Thursday 29 July 2010.

The gymnasium area, because of its increasing popularity with our clients, is gradually being updated with new equipment, and the television will be placed within this area. This facility provides an additional option to assist in refocusing thoughts away from the harrowing experiences and traumas endured during their services career, in helping them to gain relief from various chronic, complex and long term problems.

We appreciate your kind gesture and thoughts, and once again many thanks for choosing to support our charity and assisting us to progress.

With very best wishes Yours sincerely

Welcome to John Kelly

Welcome to the BB John, I think that you will find a few comrades that you served with in the fifties on the BB.

from PAUL STRETTON

Dear Member of The Blues and Royals Association,

The next edition of the Household Cavalry Journal will be published early 2011. The Journal covers the year 1 January 2010 – 31 December 2010. I’m sure that you will agree that the input of articles by members of the Associations have enhanced its content over the last several years and are much appreciated. I strongly encourage you to submit articles and photographs of your experiences and events whilst serving for the benefit of all who receive and read the Journal.

The LG and RHG/D Association Secretaries will be responsible for producing inputs to the editor on articles from the members and old comrades of the Associations.

The format for the Journal will be similar to last year’s edition however, it is hoped that the articles in general will be shorter and with more photographs. If you have an article to submit, it should be of no more that 700 words, (preferably in Word format) and accompanied by photos with separate text (not on the back) explaining what, where and who the image is depicting. Acronyms should, where possible, be avoided. Quality is preferable to waffle.

In principle, your articles should be submitted to the Association Secretaries at the address below or by e-mail as soon as possible and where possible submissions should not wait until the deadline which is 30 November 2010.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Poem of an Old Soldier....

No longer do I see my friends who marched by my side,

No longer can I hear the sound of voices raised with pride.

As we marched off down the road to WHATEVER lay in store,

Had I a choice of comrades I could not ask for more.

We set off then, that autumn day,not knowing what lay ahead.

Just young men who had NO choice,we went with flags unfurled,so that our kin could again rejoice in peace throughout the world.

I came back,I don`t know how,to see my folks again, but I pray to God my children, you will never experience the same.

Who did capture that Eagle

Waterloo Medal-1815 (Lieut. George Gunning, 1stor Royal Dragoons.), original steel clip and ring suspension, light
edge bruise and some contact marks, otherwise good very fine Value Estimate £6,000-8,000

Lieutenant George Gunning; Ensign 17 th Foot 1804;Commanded Grenadier Company, 9th Foot at Vimiera; transferred
Lieutenant 1 st Dragoons, 1809; served in Captain Methuen’s 7th Troop, during the Waterloo Campaign (wounded) and led his troop
in the charge of the Union Brigade; he was also a claimant for killing the Officer in charge of the colour party bearing the Eagle
Of the 105th Regiment of Line, which was subsequently captured.

The Taking of the Eagle of French 105 th Ligne There is a certain amount of controversy surrounding the capture
of the 105th’ Eagle, with two claimants from the same regiment  contesting the honour, the first being Captain A. K.  Clark 1 st
Dragoons (later Lieutenant General), and the other being Corporal  F. Stiles (later Ensign 6 th West India Regiment).

At Waterloo, shortly before 2 p.m., the 105th as part of d’Erlon’s corps, advanced to attack Picton’s division. The 1 st Dragoons
Charged, and pushed back the French column thus exposing the Eagle. It is at this point that Clark laid his claim that it was he who
Spotted the Eagle being rushed back towards safety, and that it was he who charged forward to kill the officer guarding the Eagle.
He stipulated that as the standard fell to the ground he ordered  Corporal Stiles to secure it and carry it back to the rear.

Corporal  Stiles, however, contended that he captured the Eagle, after being given an order to attack it by his troop commander

Lieutenant Gunning.
Colonel Clifton (the commanding officer of the 1st Dragoons at the start of the battle), ordered an investigation into the affair. This
Enquiry continued into 1816 when Clifton sent for Stiles, informing him that he needed witnesses to substantiate his claim. As a result
of this Stiles wrote to his former troop commander Lieutenant  Gunning,

“Sir,
This day Colonel Clifton sent for me about the taking the Eagle and  Colours. He asked me if I had any person that see me take the
Eagle, I told him that you see me, I believe, as the officer of the  French was making away with it. I belonged to your troop at that
Time, and you gave me orders to charge him, which I did, and took it from him. When I stated it to him this day, he wants to know the
Particulars about it, and me to rite to you for you to state to him   how it was. I would thank you to rite to the Colonel as you was the
Nearest officer to me that day. Sir, by so doing, you will much  oblige. Stiles was twice promoted as a result of his claim, whereas Clark
did not receive anything directly for his claimed actions, this would   suggest that the powers that be recognised Stiles’ claim, which
was further supported by Gunning himself when he wrote to Major  General Sir H. Torens (22.2.1816),

“Sir,
It being believed that some military honour may be conferred in   consequence of the Eagles taken at the ever-memorable Battle of
Waterloo, induces me to state, for the consideration of his Royal  Highness the Commander-in-Chief, that it was by my orders that
Sergeant Stiles secured the Eagle of the 105th Regiment of French Infantry. I am enabled to prove this fact by Sergeant Stiles’ letter to
Me of the 31st ult. a copy of which I have the honour to enclose. I should have made this statement before, but my extreme ill state
of health, in consequence of my wounds received at the Battle of  Waterloo, has caused me to be absent from my regiment, and I did
Not consider it consistent to write to a Sergeant for the particulars   which he has now unsolicited sent to me. I have heard that other
claims are about to be made relative to the Eagle taken by   Sergeant Stiles; his letter proves most clearly it was by my orders he
Did secure the Eagle, and as no other officer was near me at   the time, I gave the order. I hope his Royal Highness, the
Commander-in-Chief, will consider that it was owing to my orders the Eagle was captured from the enemy; as had I acted differently
to what I did at that critical moment, I think the Eagle would not  have been taken from the enemy, which, by a personal interview, I
Think I could explain fully to the satisfaction of his Royal Highness.”

This remained unacceptable to Clark, who was twice wounded at  Waterloo, and during the next 23 years he made a further 10
Official complaints. Gunning added another note of controversy by later claiming in “Documents of the Gunning Family” (privately
Published in 1834), that it was he who killed the French officer in charge of the Colours. Whatever conclusions can be drawn from
This action, it is likely that in the heat of the battle several    individuals may have contributed to the capturing of the Eagle.

By my reading of this evidence Stiles took the Standard  , Gunning then killed the Standard bearer , and Clark who came upon the seen
Ordered Stiles to the rear with the  Eagle  Claiming OFFICER Privilege
