WWII underground V1 & V2 Rocket Site museum in the Pas de Calais

  1. A good WWII Rocket museum site to visit. It just goes to show how advanced the Germans were during this period in out history - a few more years and things might have turned out quite different! Accustomed as I was to taking the Harwich -v- Hook route! Dover to Dunkirk solved two problems as my uncle was evacuated from there in 1940. The last picture shown - Dover Castle reminded me of the time that we did a wedding for Maj. Hodson while stationed in Shorncliffe. Anybody know what happened him?

  2. Ah -those V1s,seen many hundred fly over my head, and two took our roof off.The nearest V2 fell some way from us,we heard the explosion and then the sound of its travel - eerie!!!!They were both a hit or miss weapon, like the bombing of cities, which stiffened morale rather than break it!

  4. I remember seeing the explosion of a V2 in the Brentford Chiswick area from Ashford railway bridge and the explosion seconds after. The one that dropped in Ashford some time after completly wiped out the house that my dad looked at before the war ,luckily he turned out down as everybody in the house were wiped out..It also took the roof off the front of our school , which meant we only had half day schooling and loads of homework for the next six months .the roofer who replaced the tiles put a gigantic V in contrasting tiles which is still there.

  5. We lived in S.Woodford and I went to school in Walthamstow while the V.1.s and V.2.s were dropping. Sirens went for V1s and we moved out of the classrooms into the corridors and carried on. The window panes were firmly secured with sticky tape! V2's gave no warning, a very loud bang followed by a roar of the rocket motors. we had one fall in a park about 100yds. from the house. If we had had glass in the windows it would have been blown in, as it was the tarpaulins came in, also blew off the roof. We slept in the front room downstairs in a Morrison shelter, basically an open-sided steel box ! My Dad beat the record for the 10 yard sprint when he was watching a V1 from the back doorstep and the engine cut out! Fortunately it was one of the few that glided down and landed some miles away.

  6. Harold,
We had an Anderson shelter in the garden(though never used)was the Morrison one the type under the table? And we had our windows adorned with sticky tape, made window cleaning obselete!I once saw an RAF pilot tip the wing of a V1 with his Spitfire causing it to fall in the open country.

We also had an Anderson type shelter in the back garden, which gave a fair imitation of a submarine, and we had to pump it out with the stirrup pump every so often. We abandoned it in favour of the Morrison, cramped but dry! My Aunt in Walthamstow, which was bombed a lot, slept in her bed, she said that if she was going to be bombed, at least she'd be bombed in comfort.

  11. Yes Don, Denis has gone AWOL again and taken his little dog and you can be sure he will feed him like a little Royal, I was beginning to think that most of the site had been asked to join him as it has been very quiet since he left, Stan we are always taking advantage of him even when he is at home our banter with him is all that keeps him going, he will soon be back again now as he can not stay away too long as he will think he has been missed or he might be missing something so watch out this weekend. ( only joking)
