Congratulations Brian, we older ones stayed together through thick and thin not like today with a lot of youngsters , one little set back and they are off, and if they have children they are the one's that suffer most of the time. hoping that you have a memorable time in New York.
Wa-H ey ...so your a Geordie Bri and just down the road from good old Blyth! During our stint in the Far East we were on board HMS Woodbridge Haven. Sadly she was broken up at BOLCOW, Blyth on 12th August 1965. Rumour has it that the wooden decking was used to make local Garden Furniture so if you come across a bench or two with the markings "Royals" and “P58” then would you please let me know! Happy anniversary to you both.
Stan do you know mutch about blyth my father worked down crofton & bates pit my mate worked at bolcows saw many a good ship broke up there.I have some photos ships at bolcows will check. It will be true about the decking many a pub in Blyth ended up with a ships wheel from bolcows.
Brian, some very good friends of ours (whose father took part in the Jarrow marches) came from Blyth, that's the only connection. HMS Woodbridge Haven (P58) was a WWII Frigate from the Atlantic Convoy days that ended up as Depot Minesweeper to the inshore flotilla Far East. She visited Saigon and Nha Trang during the troubles and landed Royal Marine Commandos in Borneo during the Confrontation. On our way to the Philippines we took part in their exercises off Borneo. During refuelling at sea she got an air-lock in the system which caused the engines to stop and pull us into the side of the tanker - with near disastrous results I might add! I think that's one of the reasons why she was scrapped. The ships bell is in the Council offices at Woodbridge, Suffolk (Nr Harwich) as for the ships wheel? Well, there's a thought now, any chance of locating it? I'll put some photos up shortly.
