Been a great weekend for BBQ,s but the machine now needs a good degrease and a shine. Good job I still have some gunk left in the 5 gal drum I liberated after the Recce Troop CIV of 1967! Happy days...now where did I leave that quarter five sixteenth?
You left it in my ferret 00CC63. I think I will remember that reg number for the rest of my life..........
ReplyDeleteJasus, you mean to tell me that COMPO tasted good after all those years,
ReplyDeletehope you get over the Bombbay gallops before the Weekend.

Best Regards Paddy Henchion
Is that the quarter five that I went diffy on a tool check and you raised a P1954? Now I know what happened to it, and all this time I blamed Notty my commander. Recce Troop was the best time. Look forward to the reunion.
ReplyDeleteDave
Talking of Ferret registration numbers, mine was 02 DA 04 the first ferret in the regiment to have indicators fitted by 4 Armd Wksps.I saw it on telly a few years after leaving the regiment being driven through the streets of Beruit by, (I think) , the QDG,s.
ReplyDeleteYou always had a problem looking after your kit
ReplyDeletedave,Remember those Mess Tins,??
Tom
Nothing like a bit of mutton scotch style on the old BBQ,my gas and rock type has given up the ghost,so am buying a SS chargcoal one - food tastes better on charcoal anyway!Off to the3 Garden show tomorrow for the weekend,so hope you all enjoy yours!

I've still got it I was using to get the kidney plate off my Cent, do you want it back.Dave B
ReplyDeleteAre you trying to tell me that you managed to smuggle a Cent home in your MFO?
ReplyDeleteGarden show in Koblenz was great, wonderful flowers, good food, wine and beer, and the trip on the cable railway over the Rhine was quite an experience!

Don

How about a few Paderborner's, a quick schnelly and a walk round Hermans Denkmal?
ReplyDeleteGetting a bit creaky in the knees for old Hermann these days but the Padders sounds good (though flip top Herfs would be better) especially if downed with a currywurst and mayonnaisy
ReplyDelete........frites!
ReplyDeleteReally glad you added the frittes. They go sooo well with the curry wurst and I take your point Herffies are probably better than Paderborners. Oh to go back to Border Patrols, champignon suppe in a Gastatte and running the 30' lead into the bar for radio stag. Tune Antennae.
ReplyDeleteDon't think the handbrewed Detmolder was in circulation when you guys were in Detmold, you used to sup mainly Herforder or Paders, but today Detmolder is THE stuff! And it goes down best with bratties, currywurst,or one of my special steaks, with bags of salady stuff!!!!

Don (guten appetit)
Found some DAB in Morrisons not so long ago and couldn't resist buying a few. Brought back a few memories but happily without the subsequent thumping head and the technicolour shirt front
ReplyDeleteAh,now DAB brought back some memories of Wesendorf. We brought a crate of DAB for a party, when we opened the first bottle it exploded all over us,and in the beer were cigarette ends.An inspection of the crate revealed that other bottles had fag ends in 'em too,the next day the CO had the DB salesman on our carpet,he was very sorry and said someone must have slipped that crate through with unwashed bottles before filling. We enjoyed DB for the rest of our stay in Wesendorf kostenlos!!!!!!Now own up that man,who poked his fag ends in the empty bottles?????

Don
DAB is indeed a fine brew but out of the two I would go for DUB, tho' if push come to shove it would still be Herforder.
ReplyDeleteEveryone to their own poison!!!!

Don
And can somebody tell me why the 'ell Becks got so popular!?
ReplyDeleteOften wondered that myself - think its very popular in the States? Not my cup of tea at all!
ReplyDelete-------
Don
Well. The States are welcome to it!
ReplyDeleteBTW........OO DA 62 was my chariot as Pixie will confirm. There are several photos of it.....usually up to the axles in mud. Clumsy bu££ers.
ReplyDeleteMight need to ask Notty about when we returned from Denmark to join the regiment on Soltau. We were the only callsign to travel all the way down the wrong side of the country and only linked up with the rest of the troop just as we were running out of fuel after crashing across a protected burial site. Eyes and Ears. I also agree about Becks.......not nice.
ReplyDeleteYes. I remember Denmark.Well....bits of it. I will be forever grateful to the young Danish soldier who took me and John McEvoy home to Silkeborg with him for the weekend. Have never eaten so much fruit cake in my life.....oh and Tuborg......probably the best muscle relaxant in the world!
ReplyDeleteOn second thoughts.....perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned Silkeborg. Not sure the Troop Leader ever knew about that. Not that he would have cared much......I bet he remembers even less about Denmark than I do....
ReplyDeleteNow if we are talking hazy memories.......who remembers the Recce Troop week of exercises with the Belgian 3rd Cavalrie in Cologne eh lads?
ReplyDeleteIs that where Pixie ended up in hospital after being bitten by something? What about the Van Deux's
ReplyDeletewith the Canadians.boy did they like a drink.
Bet I know what bit him!!!!!!
ReplyDelete------
Don
I think her name was Grunhilde.......
ReplyDeleteAnd I bet I know where he got bitten too!!!!Hope it did'nt have lasting effects?
ReplyDelete--------
Don
No not too bad as I recall she was a real lady and took her teeth out first. Classy or what?
ReplyDeleteNow then lads - whats with the BBQ?
ReplyDelete------
Don
Seems like a long time ago now since that BBQ.......it ain't stopped raining since!
ReplyDeleteIt must have been eventful too. you have had a cent kidney plate, my 1/4 5/16 spanner, a couple of ferrets, a trip to Denmark, an exercise with the Belgiques, a forum on German lager and Pixie being bitten by a demented toothless woman. Please remind me if ever I'm invited to a BBQ at your drum to dose up with valium first. Look forward to seeing you Saturday. Dave 118
ReplyDeleteLol ........and they try to tell us life is over after retirement! Looking forward to Saturday also. I hope Pixie has fully recovered from his nasty bite by now......it means a lot of sitting down on them long haul flights from the States!
