give me a date of service and postings ?? I have a vague recollection if its the same frank that whos in Detmold in the 60s all the best hope you get in touch with some old Friends Keith F.
Hi Kjfairey, my dad joined the regiment in 1964. Had a training accident where he hurt his knee in a tank and was sent to Kirkcudbright in Scotland for I think about 2 years (just as well he did as he met his wife to be and of course my mum!) to regain his A1 fitness. Back to the regiment in about 1967, in Germany (Detmold) and served through to amalgamation in B Squadron and Command Squadron as a radio operator. Hope this helps? John.
Hi Johnbaz, thanks for your comment. You are mostly right. Yes, he was in Detmold. Yes to being Irish (From Cork in the Emerald Isle, 5'04" tall) but he was in B Squadron. Thanks for taking the trouble to comment. John.
Hi sorry john didn't read properly you are his son . Yes i do remember now . very nice guy and not loud like me then . Was he not a tank driver first of all ?
Hi Johnbaz, by his own admission he was quite a quiet person. No, he wasn't a driver. I believe his job title was Loader/Operator. He tells me he spent a lot of his time in a tank that had a bulldozer type attachment on the front, used if I'm right for digging out the ground for getting the tanks into the 'hull down' position. Please correct me if I've got it wrong. He became a Local Lance Corporal but I think this may have been just after the amalgamation. Did you work together?
I thought so, John. There were a surprising number of Corkmen in the regiment, but only two that I know of on the BB.Myself and Michael Henchion. What part of the city did your Dad come from. Paddy
Hi Johnbaz, just spoke to my dad and I've got a few details sorted out now. He was only in the bulldozer tank in 1964. He then had his accident and spent 2 and half years in Kirkcudbright in Scotland. Then back to the regiment in Detmold. Most of his time was spent in SHQ B Squadron and then went to Command Squadron for his last few months prior to amalgamation. He does remember your name but doesn't think you were his driver in 64. How does this fit in with your recollections? Thanks, John.
Of course John, I know Grafton St. Michael Henchion belonged not far away ,Kyle St. Your Dad will know that. I was brought up in Crones Lane a bit out from of the city centre on the south side. Thanks for the info I like to picture the place and who we are. Paddy
Hi Paddy, thanks for your update. Its a small world! Hope you will be at the reunion next year as I have just booked up the hotel for my dad and I. You and my dad could catch up on old Cork! All the very best Paddy, John S
