Hi, Harry, I well remember the day of the big Bang. Do you remember when an ashtray flew from the barracks straight through a window of the flats behind us? Can't place you, please let meknow your full name. It's good to know that there some of us from Berlin around. Regards, Jim Harris - now "Down Under".
Hello Jim, I don't remember the ashtray, but I do remember the broken windows we carefully stacked beforehand .I am Harry(Bob) Robertson the Royal Signals Lancejack always considered myself more of a Royal than Signals. Do you remember Jimmy Bland he used to drive the Husky I used to ne t into into HQ BTB every day what a skive. I am in the front row of the Squadron photo where are you? best wishes Bob
Bob, I do remember many of our so-called "attached" and I'd say most of them were every bit Royals, and did everything they could to avoid a posting. ------ Don
thanks Don,I was elected an " Honary Royal" at a particuly hectic corporals mess night.I was courted by Major Grieves on my demob interview but eyes were on Civvy street.Still am not sure whether I did the right thing. Bob
Dear Bob, Thanks for your reply but I was not in the Squadron photo, probably on leave. I remember Jimmy Bland, I took over driving the husky after him.In 1952 when I was stationed with 7th Armoured Div. HQ. I went on exercise Surprise Packet in england. My 1500 truck broke down on North circular road. Were you the one who came over to say "Hello" to me?
Dear Jim, That incident o n the North Circular Rd rings a distant bell, can't remember the details but I could have been in that area at that time.Do you know whether Jimmy Bland married his German girl friend ,I went to his engagment party and her relatives cleared us out of cigarettes in the first hour. regards Bob
Harry I remember the attempt by the Engineers to blow up the blockhouses. two attempts were made ,one which affected our wooden garages . I was in Lt Price's troop for the entire detachment ,the troop Sgt was Topper Brown who had been the Farrier Sgt in 1939 in the Middle East. The officer in charge of the Demolition started the operation as a Major he finished as a Lt.? I visited the Bunkers, they were formidable to say the least I think he tried his best. Don
Hi, Harry, Nice to know some of the squaddies remember Berlin. We visited there in 1984, the barracks as we knew them were a hospital then. don't know if Jimmy Bland married his German girlfriend but I married mine and next year in May we celebrate our diamond Wedding. Who said it would'nt last!! regards, Jim.
Hello Don, I remember Lt Price well ,if I remember right he left the Royals for R.E.M.E.My grandad was a Farrier Sgt with the A.S.C. in World War 1 . Still got his Medals and badges etc . Jim we celebrate ours in 2012 but at the moment Joyce is in Hospital and not very well Regards Bob
