HOME HQ
1. I have been asked by Thelma Lane and her family to pass on their sincere thanks and gratitude for all the messages of condolence and tributes they have received to her late husband, Major Brian ("Bronco") Lane, who passed away on 10th November. She and the family would also like to thank all those that attended the funeral service which demonstrated the respect that Brian was held in by hundreds of friends. Understandably, there are far too many messages for Thelma and the family to respond to personally however, they would like their thanks to be passed to everyone.
2. A former Blues and Royals Officer has asked me to make the following employment opportunity known to the membership:
CARETAKER/SECURITY MANAGER, EAST DEVON : To act as Caretaker and Security Manager for a sizable country house in Devon in the absence of the residents while living full time in the gatehouse of the property. Contract likely to last at least six months while the house is on the market. This job would be suitable for a proactive single person who will take ownership of the role and take personal pride in its appearance, its security and the daily functioning of the staff. PAY: £2.5k per month. Start date 26 Dec. A more detailed Job Description is attached and any queries or application should be made to: oliver.birkbeck@guardcorps.co.uk.
3. The Service Personnel & Veterans Agency (SPVA) cover a large number of aspects that may be of interest to those that have served in the Armed Forces. If you need information on anything from Veterans issues, medals, Service Pensions and provision of the Veterans Badge etc. If you have any queries or just require information, please visit: http://www.veterans-uk.info/
4. The Regiment continues to serve in Helmand Province, Afghanistan until April/May 2010. To date they have been very busy and for operational reasons their activities are not disclosed when information (however innocent) could be used to assist the enemy. I am sure you will join me in wishing all members of the Household Cavalry Regiment (and all Armed Forces personnel) a quiet Christmas and New Year and the safe return to their families and friends. Home HQ will be closed down from 18 December 2009 - 4 January 2010 however, if you do have any important issues please leave a message at the number below and the voicemail will be monitored throughout the period.
I thank you all for your continued support to the Association and wish you all a pleasant and prosperous Christmas and New Year.

(For those who are curious, Saturday afternoon is our lowest-traffic time of the week)
This means that for a short period of time the site will be unavailable for maintenance, and accounts will come back on-line as soon as they are moved. We are working hard to make the transition as smooth as possible, and to minimize any downtime or disruptions.
Once this phase is complete, there will be one more maintenance window that will be required to complete the move, which will happen approximately 10 days from now. At that point, the move will be complete and we'll be up and running in our new facility, with faster hardware than ever.

Doncaster Rugby Club Under 13s
Help For Heroes - Christmas Rugby Tournament
Before I go into details let me explain some background to the event. We have started to raise money for our end of season tour to help those lads who find it difficult to attend such trips due to costs. This is always a difficult but rewarding process as I am sure you will know from your own experience. However during our first fund raising meeting we decided unanimously that we should also set aside some specific events to raise money for other causes outside of our own little world. We quickly decided that we should nominate Help For Heroes as our charity for 2009/2010. There were a few reasons for this;
Firstly a Doncaster Rugby Club ex-junior section player, Ben Parkinson, was been badly injured whilst serving with 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (follow these links to read more about Ben’s story and his unflinching bravery:
http://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/community/Paratrooper-Ben-went-to-Afghanistan.3246302.jp and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1203202/Horrifically-injured-army-hero-Ben-Parkinson-confounds-doctors-learning-speak-again.html
Secondly our head coach served with The Blues and Royals for 22 years. The Blues and Royals are part of the Household Cavalry who are currently deployed in Afghanistan.
Thirdly we also have some connections with London Irish, through ex-players of both Doncaster and London Irish, whose nominated charity is also Help For Heroes and we hope to have some support from them for this event.
So what are we trying to do? Our intention with this tournament is to have some really good games of open running rugby but with the added and important aim of raising some serious money for Help For Heroes. We have registered the event with H4H and our reference number is 20091109-4453-4130.
The ways in which we aim to raise money are as follows:
Try Sponsorship – With the attached form we would like all players participating in the event to approach their friends, family, parents’ friends, parents’ work colleagues, etc to gain sponsorship for each try that your team scores in the event. Please be aware that the refereeing style will be to encourage try scoring by all teams! If you require help with printing the forms then please let me know and we can work together to make suitable arrangements.
Collections – We will have Help For Heroes collection buckets on the day and you and your supporters will be suitably hassled and harried to make cash donations as the event goes along.

RIP----MAJ LANE
I must sadly report the passing of 496966 Major Brian (“Bronco”) LANE who died yesterday afternoon (10 November 2009) at Frimley Park Hospital aged 76 years, he had bravely been fighting cancer for some time. Brian Lane served between December 1949 - October 1986, initially with the Grenadier Guards and then The Blues and Royals where he achieved a Late Entry Commission. Those who met him, I’m sure will agree, that a more professional, imposing and passionate soldier, Warrant Officer and Commissioned Officer, you could not find. The thoughts and condolences of the Association go to his wife, daughters, family and friends at this difficult time. Funeral details will be released when known.
THE BLUES AND ROYALS REGIMENTAL COLLECT
O Lord Jesus Christ who by the Holy Apostle has called us to put on the armour of God and to take the sword of the spirit, give thy grace we pray thee, to the Blues and Royals that we may fight manfully under thy banner against all evil, and waiting on thee to renew our strength, may mount up with wings as eagles, in thy name, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

deck of cards
Please do not delete! You will be glad you didn't.
Deck of Cards
It was quiet that day, the guns and the mortars, and land mines for some reason hadn't been heard.
The young soldier knew it was Sunday, the holiest day of the week.
As he was sitting there, he got out an old deck of cards and laid them out across his bunk.
Just then an army sergeant came in and said, 'Why aren't you with the rest of the platoon?'
The soldier replied, 'I thought I would stay behind and spend some time with the Lord.'
The sergeant said, 'Looks to me like you're going to play cards.'
The soldier said, 'No, sir. You see, since we are not allowed to have Bibles or other spiritual books in this country,
I've decided to talk to the Lord by studying this deck of cards.'
The sergeant asked in disbelief, 'How will you do that?'
'You see the Ace, Sergeant? It reminds me that there is only one God.
The Two represents the two parts of the Bible, Old and New Testaments
The Three represents the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost.
The Four stands for the Four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John .
The Five is for the five virgins there were ten but only five of them were glorified.
The Six is for the six days it took God to create the Heavens and Earth.
The Seven is for the day God rested after making His Creation.
The Eight is for the family of Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives -- the eight people God spared from the flood that destroyed the Earth.
The Nine is for the lepers that Jesus cleansed of leprosy He cleansed ten, but nine never thanked Him.
The Ten represents the Ten Commandments that God handed down to Moses on tablets made of stone.
The Jack is a reminder of Satan, one of God's first angels, but he got kicked out of heaven for his sly and wicked ways and is now the joker of eternal hell.
The Queen stands for the Virgin Mary.
The King stands for Jesus, for he is the King of all kings.
When I count the dots on all the cards, I come up with 365 total, one for every day of the year..
There are a total of 52 cards in a deck; each is a week - 52 weeks in a year.
The four suits represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
Each suit has thirteen cards -- there are exactly thirteen weeks in a quarter.
So when I want to talk to God and thank Him, I just pull out this old deck of cards and they remind me of all that I have to be thankful for.'
The sergeant just stood there. After a minute, with tears in his eyes and pain in his heart, he said, 'Soldier, can I borrow that deck of cards?'
Please let this be a reminder and take time to pray for all of our soldiers who are being sent away, putting their lives on the line fighting
Prayer for the Military.
Please keep the wheel rolling. It will only take a few seconds of your time, but it'll be worth it to read on....
Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.
Protect them.
Bless them and their families
I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
Amen

The Club Route Walk 2009
It all started here. Joe's Bridge near the Belgian/Dutch Frontier.
A few weeks ago some friends and I went off to Holland to raise some money for charity. This year is the 65th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden and we chose to walk The Club Route - the route XXX Corps took in their attempt to link up the bridges captured by the Airborne troops of the British and American armies. The route should have been about 65 miles, however the actual route is closer to 80. We walked it 3 days. We were raising money for the Royal British Legion and BLESMA ( British Limbless Ex-Servicemens Association ). The Ist Royal Dragoons were attached to XXX Corps for this operation and received the Battle Honour 'VEGHEL' for their efforts. I thought I would share with the group some of the photo's taken during our time in Holland.

charity auction (Dorset Squadron) annual dinner
Saturday 10th October 2009
The Carrington House Hotel
Bournemouth-on-Sea
180 diners sat down and enjoyed the dinner this year - and enjoyed General Barney even more with his speech. As with previous years, we had the auction in aid of the Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund, and with monies donated as listed below we were able to top up the charity 'pot' by £5000.00
Listed below are the five items that we auctioned and the other donations and deails ...
Item 1. Coca Cola bottle-opener - A mass produced example in bright silver metal with eyehole for attachment to string, wire etc. This is a robust pre-loved and experienced item that has seen service in many countries. Comes with to crate 20 x ½ litre bottles of Paderborner Export beer.
Winning bid of £90 from Carl Murray - Brian Mmurray's son.
Item 2. Waterloo 1815 - Two 75cl bottles of barley malt beer, Waterloo Triple 7 Triple, 7.5% alcohol and Waterloo Double 8 Dark, 8.5% alcohol - both bottles bear the intact bottle seal number 1541. Pine racked with a matching pair of 1815 style ceramic rustic Belgium beer cups. Rare and delicious beers with a brewery very near to the site where both the Household Cavalry and Royal Dragoons achieved victory in 1815.
Winning bid of £140 from John Finnie.
Item 3. Vallegre Vista Alegre Port - A presentation set of sealed four half bottles of 10, 20, 30 and 40 year old wooden cask matured port, all bottled in 2007. The Vallegre estate is one of the oldest and original of Portugal . All finely presented in cedar wood as a boxed set. Mint and brand new, all seals intact.
Winning bid of £180 - that John Finnie again
Item 4. Drum Table – The very last of a series of four hand-made drum tables by Member John Hawley. It was John’s inspiration that led to the first auction and has benefited the Fund so well. In divisional colours with the three cap badges on the side and the Household Cavalry badge centered on the top, supported on four gate leg mahogany legs with circular centre plate. Inscribed with John’s mark on the underside of the drum.
Dimensions: height 50 cm and diameter 30 cm
Winning bid of £550 - Len Knox.
Item 5. Household Cavalry Girandole. This is a brand new item, designed by Thomas Messel, who was an officer with The Blues and Royals from 1969 to 1974, he is now a much respected international furniture designer, a winner of several Guild Marks, a D&D award and is a member of the Awards Committee of The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers. The Household Cavalry girandole design was inspired by the insignia of the Household Cavalry and is finished in burnished water gilt 24ct gold leaf over a hand carved cast resin base. The glass is ‘brilliant cut’ with the E II R cipher and silvered with a unique antiqued sliver “mercury” process. The arm is 24ct bronze ormolu, cast from a 17th century Venetian master. Dimensions – height 50 cm, width 24 cm. Signed and dated by Thomas Messel.
Winning bid of £1900 by - yes -Len Knox again!
But there is more - John Finnie bid £1800 and Len topped with the winner - but john was offered another girondle at his bid of £100 and John accepted and purchased a girondole! Gentleman you are Sir!
Harry Maplesden raised £122 locally and Vic Sturrock sent in £50 in lieu of attending and we had a donation of £20 from Miss Jo Smith. That gave us £4832.00 so Dorsetsquadron tooped the money off from the raffle to make £5000.00 in total!
And we had a rattling good night - and a good Sunday morning too!!
Watch out for the newsletter later in the month and get ready with them £2 coins for next year!!
