  1. Hi Harry Thank you for he photos you sent me . At that time I was stationed in Wolfenbuttel in "B" Squadron patrolling the russian border in West Germany . The only way into Berlin was by air, you will know more about that than me. The only photo I have is the on my site this was taken outside the barrack block (which was a base used by the German Panzer Corps) it was like a 1st Class Hotel outdoor swimming pools and plenty of garages for the vehicles, 2 men to room. They certainly knew how to keep their soldiers happy. Thanks again fforr contacting me
    Cheers Ron.

  3. I'm sure that I had copies of 'photos 6&7 but God knows where they are now. I remember the Monument in 6 but have forgottn it's name or signifigance. Can you enlighten us Don?. The group was of my gunnery class and we were out on 'Target Acquition' practice which was an excuse to get away from camp for a few hours.

  4. Like Ron I was at Wolfenbuttel in B Sqn. at about the same time as the photos. We had a few lads who went to "A" Sqn from "C" Sqn. about the same time as we transferred to "B"Sqn. probably about the spring of 1949. I don't recognise any of those in the group They seem to have the old badge, i.e.before it was replaced by the Eagle. I remember the swimming pool, which was the E.W.S.tank, and served as a skating rink in the winter, absolutely solid ice!

  7. I do not remember you ,but I do remember the bombed out building behind our barrack block. I think it had been a hotel of sorts. Anyway, I do remember using it as an alternative way out of barracks. I am sure everyone knew about it but I never heard of anyone being caught. I visited Elster Platz in 1990 to find it had been completly rebuilt with no mention or sign of us ever been there . Thanks for the memories. Don 190.

  9. No, Don . The monument is somewhere within striking distance of Wolfenbuttle. How far away it is I don't know because we sometimes salied forth as far as Goslar on our little outings.

  13. I've no idea what the monument is Don. As for Goslar, I agree it is a nice place. In the days we are talking about there was a super canteen there run by the Church of Scotland I think.

  15. Bob Not surprised to hear Charlie Palmer was waiting he was a proper prick. I had a stand to with him in Suez.as a Sgt. Bimbash seperated us and I was given one months general duties but no blot on my records. In other words it was hushed up. I was given the job of being orderly Sgt of the cookhouse for two weeks ,on duty 0500-1900hrs. I then ran the Lido for two weeks 0700hrs-1900hrs during my stint there I arrested the Egyptian swimming instructer for being Doolaly with Hashish. I had to draw my pistol to quiet him.Three months later I was released as a time expired regular. So no Fieldmarshals batton in my kit. Don.

  16. Don,
As an Attached I hesitated to pass comments on any Royal . He was given a very public
dressing down by Chalkie Whites wife in front of the barrack block the lads loved it.

  17. Donald , I'm surprised to hear your remarks about Charlie Palmer. He had some pecular ways, but I would never have put him down as sneaky or underhand. As a matter of fact I shared a room with him at Chester and had a job getting him out of bed each morning to take first parade.
