The young man on the right of the four against the wall at that time lived in my area which is now called Telford but in those days it was known as Dawley, I have been trying to find him for years after I came out, as he went on to be an army driving instructor after our training and we lost contact, I assumed that he had not returned to his home town when he came out as I have asked a number of people from that area that I used to work with in various factories if they knew of him but no one knew of him so I gave up trying until the other week when I decided that I would put a letter in the local paper, the letter took over a week to appear and I was at home on the Saturday afternoon when my mobile rang and the voice on the other end was the gentleman that I had been looking for and when I asked where he was living he said that he lived in Wellington and that he had been living about ten miles from me for the last forty eight years and I had never set eyes on him once in all those years, I went to visit him yesterday at his home and met his wife and some of his family, we had such a lot of catching up to do that a couple of hours was not long enough so we will be meeting up again soon.
Don, You got to believe it, As they say hindsight is a wonderful thing, it is my regret that I had not gone that extra mile and put the letter in the paper, how things could have been so different.
Doug, I went to Carlisle on the 4th June as it is a date I cannot forget as it was my 20th birthday, If you were there at the same time you should have known our drill Sgt Wall and the other one was a Cpl but I do not remember his name, he used to walk about dead upright with his shoulders well back, I never met any other that did that , he would be the same even if he was in civvies and I must admit he was always very smart.
John -- Tried to post my intake photo. The site would not accept it. Will try again. Our "Drill Pig" was a L/Cpl. in 11 Hussars. Will try again with Photo.
