  12. I was at Salzgitter when we blew up the Herman Goering steel works, and the natives were very restless. I'm not sure about the photo being at Salzgitter, but it could well be. They blew up some cooling towers when I was there, which made a lovely pile of firewood. I have some photos somewhere but they are only small and I would have to learn how to publish them.. the 2nd. photo - the 2nd from left has a look of Paddy McQuaid, but i'm not sure. Don't recognise the Officer. Harold.

  15. The Natives were very restless indeed at the destruction of the steel works and that was why the brigade was there to stop them getting on site and interrupting the work. The regiment was posted around the main works but a large piece of unused rough ground was left unguarded. As an afterthought I was given the task to guard it and to do so I was given about forty odds bodds and sods. Everyone from storeman to cooks and all trades in between. Being only a young Cpl. with no training for such work you can imagine what went through my mind.Everyone was armed but I don't think that we had ammo.Down the road came about two or three hundred shouting and gesticulating angry civilians so I had to make a stand . We were off the road on the rough so I fell in my motley crew in two ranks, rifles at the rear ,stenguns at the front and we went through the drill and fixed bayonets. After another few drill movements 'On Guard' etc the crowd stopped and after the explosions dispersed .Shortly afterwards a jeep cane tearing over the ground and I was confronted by a Brigadier asking who was in charge. He was surprised to see that it was only a Cpl ,said 'Well done' and drove off. I think I was more nervous of the Brig than I was of the crowd.

  16. KEN DICK WAS PROMOTED S/SGT IN 1956 BUT LEFT TO BECOME A CIVVY SOON AFTER,
HE WON THE SGTS MESS WOODEN SPOON FOR THE WORST PISTOL SHOT

  17. Yes,I was there at Salzgitter, was roped in to drive a Daimler, boy was I nervous surrounded by all those steel workers, but to us I thought them very friendly. And I do recall the only ammo we had was for the Very pistol! And I recall Ken Dick "winning" the wooden spoon as I won the O'Shaunegssy vase(spelling?)for the individual rifle at the same meeting!

  18. So in what year did this all take place?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I remember it was winter as we were wearing tank suits and it was bloody freezing! We had a banner, a sheet on two poles, and painted on it was "Halt! oder wir schiessen". Delboy I don't think it could have been 1948 as I wasn't drafted to the Royals from Barford Camp (XII R.L.) until Jan.1949. How times have changed. I bet the natives have built it all again years ago, and our steel industry has been sold off to the Indians!

  24. I don't think it was June 1950 as I was demobbed in May 1950 and was back in Manchester by that time looking for a job. I thought it was in winter, but I haven't found my old photos yet so I'm not too sure. Did Fred Dibnah blow up the chimney stack? He did his N.S. in the 14th/20th Hussars, but I think he was a year or two younger than me.

  25. Harold the photo was taken from the ROYALS EAGLE JOURNAL JUNE 1950.
SO IT COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN before that as remember it had to go to print

  26. derek, do you remember the engineers blowing up the blockhouse by Elster Platz ,the roof was already blown so lumps of concrete went everywhere and the blast blew the slates off the houses and the stained window out of the ratzhaus nearby .The natives really did get restless then everybody was armed up for the rest of the day.

  31. Derek thanks for putting on screen the pics from the "Eagle". I take your point re.the publication delay. I have found some of my pics and will have to ask son how to download them etc as I'm a dinosaur when it comes to computers. They are only small prints and I will have to pick out the clearest ones.
