Well we reached 13 deg here in Paderborn today all the snow is gone except for the dirty stuff on the side of the road, sun was shining birds singing I noticed that a lot of the Daffs are showing their heads, the Rhodos & azaleas are looking fine with big fat flower buds on them,I suppose its to much to hope for an early spring, still a bit of frost in the ground when that's gone I can get the remaining bulbs planted that came late. Frank
Brilliant sunshine all day here - best day of the New Year, so far in the UK!
ReplyDeleteNo it is just pretending to be spring the sun is shining but there is a heavy frost, and it is still cold. The grpund is to hard to dig despite the heavy rain over the last couple of days. But it is probably just arouind the corner because the blackbirds are very busy nesting and the birds are singing, Scotland still has severe weather warnings according to the news down here in the west country. ReplyDeleteOne up on you Frank - 14c in Detmold yesterday, same with my Rhodos, since I have been spraying 'em with roseclear I seem to have beaten the "threadworm"?Out on the hike saw something I never saw before,in the flooding stream nearby saw two Wasseramsels(look exactly like a blackbird with a white breast)going under the water to catch the insects they feed on.Checked out my English bird Lexicon, but could not find them, maybe they are not native to the UK?Floods reported in many places, and the rivers/streams are still rising!

Agree Stan, the wife and I went on our first walk of the new year in brilliant sunshine and beautiful clear blue skies round by Barnt Green reservoir and we have never seen so many Canadian Geese in one of the fields we walk by. Tell you what though our faces were all a glow when we got back.
ReplyDeleteKeith Shaw.
Wasseramsels!! Sounds like our dipper
ReplyDeleteEven better today Keith (Sunday 9th) albeit they said we were going to have another 4" of Snow! Too busy washing salt off the car to go walkabouts. Mate of mine just had a new set of 'sills' fitted to his Rover45 - reminds me of my old mini when the floor pan disappeared one day!
ReplyDeleteDippers they are .when I used to live out on Sennelager ranges I had a couple used to spend their time eating snails on top of the sluice gate of my lake .Elfriede used to crush the empty shells and mix them with the poultry mash .how is that for recycling. but I don't think its spring anymore because the last baby hedgehog has finally gone into hibernation, and I've got a sweeter smelling boiler room back. Frank
ReplyDeleteAh -many thanks for "dipper"(or Cinclus Cinclus in Latin)as I have just learned! After the frost of this morning, and the most dangerous roads I have walked on this winter, the sun is shining and the blackbirds have been having a bath - in the shade its 3c - water everywhere!

On the subject of birds, this last w/end was the german winter bird census, whereas Saturday we had lots of birds in the garden, the only ones that were here today were our flock of Bantams enjoying their first days out after the snow.....Frank
ReplyDeleteand on the subject of the seasons I was watching Antiques Roadshow yesterday and the name of Harry Lauder came up . I guess we must be one of the few groups where at least 95% of us remember him .there might be a couple who are so old that they can't remember anything. but then no names no pack drill. Frank
ReplyDeleteWent out in the sunshine in the garden this morning, talk about that film "The Birds",the crows were on the trees all around waiting for some food to be put out,I notice they are even eating the conkers from under the bushes, and a number of the Silver Herons here have not survived the cold.
ReplyDeleteGlad to say I'm one of the youngsters who remembers Harry!
