I got family living in Bournemouth he tells me he cant get out of the house because he is snowed in.& that he has had to get his bother-in -law to bring him some food ! I asked him how deep it was he says 4 inches. so I went out and dug my car out from under 20 inches of snow ploughed down the drive though mtr high ruts of snow & ice where the lorries delivering to the local DIY store had been manoeuvring. drove on to the bank then realizing that my tank was almost empty got to the filling station filled up with the last of the diesel they had they had all ready run out of petrol and normal diesel ( it must be my lucky day ) the attendant says she can close now until the weather changes because the tankers can't get through. My relative used to be an HGV Driver.mmmmn. what ever happened to the tough guys who's winter attire used to be shorts and sting vests. who used to get though despite all adversities I 'spose its down to the E U and health and safety rules again I was once told by an HGV driver that if he had a puncture he had to call recovery out because he was delivering foodstuffs. Frank
Frank--You are spot on with your comments..I was a Tanker driver for 28 years and can recall much worse snow and ice conditions than it is has been of late, eg.in 1963 with several feet of snow and many snow drifts to contend with,we still managed to complete our deliveries albeit several hours later than scheduled.
ReplyDeleteGraham.
We had 6 inches of snow here in the West Midlands yesterday!
ReplyDeleteYes it is not the snow thats the bother it is the ice mostly but it is also the other idiot drivers that drive at full speed ahead what ever the weather. We are still working, although yesterday ,it was my asthma that beat
ReplyDeleteme, at about three o'clock the intense cold brought on an attack.I had real trouble breathing so I had to stop, and go home but i will be back on thursday as long as it is safe and we have fuel and drivers prepared to drive they keep going
Here in Detmold we are slowly sinking in snow - not usually a problem, but the sheer amount means that the snow ploughs are narrowing the roads to one way traffic, salt stocks running out,and the biggest problem is before the traffic lights where novice drivers, too many revs, polish the snow to ice!But I have now got used to ice and snow after 4 weeks of it,and it looks like a white Christmas AND New Year.Happy motoring!

PS -I met a Bernadiner dog with a flask around his neck!!!!!!
we had 2ft of snow which kept us house bound for 5 days. my drive is 45 yds long and leads on to an unmade lane all would have to be cleared to get the car out.On day 5 the men from the other properties all joined together and we cleared a path down the lane then cleared my drive. Its nice to have good nieghbours. .
ReplyDeleteWell it must have been the Royals D & M Course
ReplyDeleteI remember winter 1962/63. Reporting to Tidworth after Malaya. Arriving at Andover station.
ReplyDeleteNo Regt. bus. Families on train for MQs. @ Tidworth loaded onto 3Tonners for transit to Tidworth.
Sadly, we lost Sgt. George Kerr on Training Area, Salisbury Plain, in heavy snow, whilst driving a Centurion. R.I.P.
Doug Best.
Did you make use of his flask. Happy Christmas and New Year to Everyone only two more days to work then two days off
ReplyDeleteI remember jim telling me about a friend being killed whilst driving a tank, but he only told me once so I don't know who it was, but it upset him very much eben after all those years
ReplyDeleteAh yes I remember that winter in Tidworth and the sad accident.I also remember we had to collect our own coal from Wool as the delivery firm refused to come up to Tidworth. We had a garage with our MQ,but that winter the snow drifted up to the roof and we never used it,mind you it was a problem sonetimes finding that little VW amoung the mounds of snow! The CO used to tell me every day "this must be the end of the world here"!

Don
Be careful with that snow clearing . Don my old Bride done some last year using one of those snow shovels that the specialists use to clear snow from roofs ,when it was full she tried to lift it and gave herself a rupture.she's not stopped talking about her OP ever since.and snow clearing delegated to our son and daughter-in-law. now he wants me to buy him a snow plough to fit on to the sit on mower.should I tell him it'll come off his inheritance frank
ReplyDeleteMy back and snow clearing ain't the problem Frank, its where to pile the snow. One down the road bought a snow plough, used it once and is now looking for a sucker to buy it,he say's its the most useless bit of kit he ever bought!Still looking for a snow shovel.
ReplyDeleteLooks like SPRING may be a bit late this year!
---------
Don
Don if winter's here can spring be far away,it took me two hours to clear the ice rain from the windows of the car so I could go to the doc to get my INR results I had just finished and the thaw
ReplyDeletestarted .hope it continues so I can get the last bulbs in . Frank
No thaw here Frank? But the ice hanging from the gutters is getting longer and longer, luckily mine don't hang over parking slots or where folk walk!
