1957 Bovington

Hi

I'm trying to trace an ex Royal "PATRICK BELL" 22841908, passed out Bovington 1957.

Possibly went to Malaya.

Patrick came from the Ribchester area Lancs.

I've posted this information on behalf of A Mr Alan Gatenby from Bedale North Yorkshire, he did his basic training with Patrick and was in the next bunk.

Any info photo etc I will be pleased to pass on so they can both renew contact if they so wish.

Would be nice if people/members who were serving members of the Regiment could put either their Army Nr (nobody ever forgets it) - or just the first 4 numbers. This would give a little indication of the period they served.
Mine are 2404----.
Why? Well because people change in 40-50 or more years, and I don't recognize any bu---r from the few photos shown by members!
I won't be there for the reunion, it's a long way from Larzac, South of France where I live (close to) now!

Poem to the people of Wootton Bassett

People can surprise you, in their ordinary way,
They’re not the sort our rulers ask to tea
But sometimes they identify a negligence or need
That our leaders seem too occupied to see.

Like the folk of Wootton Bassett – in that little Wiltshire town
Where the hearses of the fallen trundle through,
They decided duty’s martyrs who had served their country’s cause
Should be treated with the honour they were due.

For a few attentive minutes, all the bustle and the haste
Would pause, allowing people to reflect
On the poignant truth of sacrifice, the passing of a life
And the small consideration of respect.

They didn’t seek to justify the cause for which they fell
Or glorify the reasons they were there,
Compassion was the spur behind the rows of bowing heads
And the flags that fluttered limply in the air.

Just ordinary people, some who’d seen it all before
With shadows, still, of suffering and smoke
And some restrained by adult hands who wondered why it was
That Grandpa’s voice should tremble when he spoke.

No military orders will have mustered this parade,
These are townsfolk with a mission of their own,
Expressing by their actions to the grieving and the lost
There are strangers who’ll ensure they’re not alone.

One town, one group of people, they can hardly change the world
Yet their gesture speaks for countless of their kind,
For that commonplace majority whose voice is rarely heard
And whose qualities are rarely underlined.

If the powers-that-be would listen, how much wiser they’d become,
How much closer to the populace they serve,
They could gain a new perception, treat the tawdry with contempt
And real heroes with the honour they deserve.

They should learn from Wootton Bassett that it’s what the people want,
It’s not politics with a means towards an end,
It’s a filial humanity, a bonding of the blood
By which each fallen stranger is a friend

I saw this video on the Senior Cavalry Gentlemans Club Site and I thought that it should also be put up on this one as well for all to see and to thank the people of Wootton Bassett for showing there respect for all our fallen comrades coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Searching for Tony Burr

Bob Hedges who joined the Royals in the 50s is trying to contact his friend, another ex Royal , Tony Burr who was Best man at his wedding. Bob and his Wife are renewing their Vows in September and would like their Best Man, Tony Burr to be there. If any member has contact with Tony Burr or knows his whereabouts could they let me know and I will pass it on.

If any member is in contact with Bob Hedges and his Wife please don't let on to Mrs Hedges what Bob is planning in September. Lets hope we can be of service and make their day.

Missing person

Does anyone no the whereabouts of Dave Howell. We served in A Sqdn in the 60s, he was in HQ Troop. We went up town prior to ammalgamation. I have been to where he used to live with his parents at Hoo in Kent, but no luck.

racists

Maybe, I don’t agree with the whole of this text, probably because I’m conditioned to see it as being racist, but, the sentiments all seem pretty valid!!  Judge for yourself.

 

Michael Richards Court Speech

Makes one stop and think, after reading this:
 
Michael Richards is better known as Kramer from tv's Seinfeld series.  This was his defence speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act.  He makes some very interesting points. He said: I'm proud To Be White

Someone finally said it.  How many are actually paying attention to this?
There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc.
And then there are just Americans.  You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction.
You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honky,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman' ... and that's OK.

But, when I call you; Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink, you would call me a racist.  You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?  You have the United Negro College Fund.  You have Martin Luther King Day.  You have Black History Month.  You have Cesar Chavez Day.  You have Yom Hashoah.  You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.  You have the NAACP.  You have BET.

If we had WET, (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists.  If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists.  If we had White History Month, we'd be racists.  If we had any organisation for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives we'd be racists.  We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that?

A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any colour can be in the Miss America pageant. If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships you know we'd be racists. There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US . Yet if there were 'White colleges' THAT would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists. You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us.  But, if a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats a black drug-dealer, running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.  I am proud.  But you call me a racist.  Why is it that only whites can be racists?

History ,Feb 11 1961 .Cattrick camp. Back of open 3 Ton Turk it was bally cold , Got to gard room and guess watt a fat numty sent me across the parade square I will say No moor, not the best of alitaments in my ears at the time Cold Hungry and genially up seat.Still i am much wiser for the experience done G M T. then trained to be all that whose expected ,Redye to go to the Fare East.I Never got their, Sent to west germany to tran on tanks. 8 Month later off to tidworth . Cap Amary collared me as his batman £ 10/ Bob a week and the Morris 1000 at my beck and call grate life I had (9 Years ) of bliss thank. Tell you moor soon all the best Keith F.

Brian Stratford

John Triggs has passed me some sad news regarding the health of Brian Stratford (1RD and RHG/D) who served between Oct 1959 and Apr 1979; most will probably remember him from the Orderly Room. Brian has recently been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer with a prognosis that gives him about 6 months. I have spoken with him to offer any assistance that the Association may be able to provide and understandably he sounded a bit down; he did say that he would like to hear from anyone who he served with that may remember him. Unfortunately, he does not have e-mail however, he has no reservations about providing his address for anyone who wishes to drop him a line: 10 Connaught Place, Bobblestock, Hereford HR4 9PZ. Please feel free to drop him a line or a card as I’m sure he would appreciate hearing from anyone that knew him

THE PASSING OF WILFRED JAMES

It is with sadness that I report the passing on 29 January 2009 of 14566764 Mr Wilfred James Allen (84) who served with 1st The Royal Dragoons between March 1944 to September 1947. An old soldier who will never be forgotten.

THE PASSING OF DANNY BRADLEY

It is with sadness that the passing on 2 February 2009 of 410612 WO1 (RSM) John Daniel Bradley (94) is reported; tragically his wife died a week ago. He served with 1st The Royal Dragoons between September 1937 and September 1964. His funeral service will be held on Friday 6 February 2009 at 1430 hrs at St Michaels All Saints Church, Stokenham, Devon.
Our condolences go to his family and relatives at this sad time.

Heavy and light Brigade cavalry

HI ALL

Can any one tell me what was the differences between Heavy and light Brigade cavalry ? was it what they carried  or the horses The reason i ask is my exservicmans club is going to hold a  BALACLAVA dinner in oct and being the only ex-cavalryman in the club of mostly ex navy they have ask me for info (help)
