Correction Colin, it wasn't a RAF aircraft that came down it was a USAF aircraft. From what I can remember two aircraft had been on their practice ranges and had been called in to do a strafing attack. On the second run the first aircraft came in very low, as he pulled up his after-burner and engine flamed out and the aircraft stalled. I can remember that a lot of us ran towards the aircraft when the ammunition that was still on-board started to cook off. Lots of whizzes and bangs, and a few smelly trousers.
ReplyDeleteI remember it well Pixie. I was in the transmission compartment adjusting my brakes when the jet hit about 800 yds away and a small chunk of airframe came skittering across the back decks. I kept it for years as a souvenir. It wasn't RAF though, it was a US Sabre although the pilot was actually Canadian.
