Never knew so many Spitfires existed. But I saw first hand the Spitfires and Hurricanes in action throughout the Battle of Britain, and spoke to some of the pilots who were shot down and bailed out,one phoned us up hours afterwards to say he had a new machine and had been in action again. ------ Don
Don, I think there's someone who still makes them 'as new' in Australia. Lived near Duxford 1970s - watched the Battle of Britain filming done there. Bet they wished they hadn't blown that hanger up now!
As I remember the Spitfire during the war cost 50,000 pounds to mass produce, wonder what it costs now?Seeing the battle of Britain is still firmly embedded in my head, and I can still vividly see the air conflicts going on.From where we lived we could see the barrage balloons and Ack Ack fire from the London areas. And later we saw the V1 cruising above our heads, and twice lost our roof to them, they were devastating things.
Next time your in the Pas de Calais area visit La Coupole 'domed' underground V1 & V2 rocket bunker which has only recently been turned into a museum. The RAF bombed it several times during WWII but were unable to penetrate the 24ft thick concrete dome!!
I was there last week and well worth the visit. The coordinates are 50.705247,2.243482 just copy and paste this into Google maps or Google Earth and you will see the dome.

Brought back some memories. I have just got a 21.5 inch widescreen monitor, so it looked great in full screen with no loss of pixels.
