Did any one ever claim a GSM for Malaya for the period of time the Regiment was there
ReplyDeleteIf so what were the dates given.
Because this says we should have had one ?
we did not get there untill 1961
ReplyDeletealso what about ADEN?
The only people who got GSM 'Malaya' were those that went out in the advance party. I believe Joe Fisher (ex Band R.I.P) was one of them but can't be sure. The start of our service in Malaya was from 06/11/60 onwards. So if the advanced party went out 6 months earlier which I believe they did then they would have qualified. No further GSM's were issued between 1960 & 1964 (Malay Peninsula) More people received a PJM than received a GSM in both the Malaya-Borneo (1957 - 1966) conflicts combined.
ReplyDeleteHi chaps, I have a GSM bar Malaya in my collection to 22559703 Sergeant D.L. Baillie-Hamilton but he got it because he was attached to the Malayan Armoured Car Commpany. David Baillie-Hamilton came to the Royals from the 2nd Royal tank regiment in about 1951. Does anyone remember him? Qualification for the Malaya clasp finished on 31 July 1960, having commenced in 1948! I do not remember when the Royals landed in Malaya? I do not remember having seen Joe Fisher with a medal ribbon when I was in the Band 1966-1969.
ReplyDeleteAnyone seconded to the Malayan Armed Forces between 31st August 1957 and 31st July 1960 and or seconded to the Malayan Armed Forces in operations against communist terrorists on the Thai-Malaya border between 1st August 1960 and 15th September 1963 is also entitled to receive and wear the Malaysian Active Service Medal 'Pingat Khidmat Berbakti'
ReplyDeleteA classic case of double-medalling as GSM & PKB were both for the same service. Re public records office (PRO) doucment: http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=aVqQFpr
I seem to remember Baillie-Hamilton getting the BEM ,? any one else on this
ReplyDeleteI remember Baillie- Hamilton, but as I recall he didn't spend a long time with us.
ReplyDeleteDick Watorsvki also served with the Malaya Armoured Company . He volunteered for it just after he was promoted SQMS at Wesendorf.
