I have just returned from a tour to Torquay with a Bowls Club from Rochester, Kent and had the pleasure of meeting an ex Royal, Tom Sparks, now in his 80s. Tom served from 1938 to 1946 in Palestine and was a fuel bowser driver that resupplied the Recce Troop. When Tom first went to Palestine it was still cavalry and whilst there they were mechanised to armoured cars. He had some amazing stories to tell about the transition. If anyone knows anyone that might remember Tom then please contact me and I'll put them in touch. I truly remarkable Gent. Alabest Tiger
Tiger, Very interesting, there may be one or two before my time who recall him,a picture might help if you've got one(him in uniform, and someone may "Spark"!) ---- Don
ReplyDeleteTiger thats a bit before my time.the only ones i can thnk of that wud know him are Maj Dimond and Danny Bradley they are the oldest Royals that i know..regards DEREK
ReplyDeleteTiger, this is not in answer to your querie but to say Hi and welcome to the board. I see that you live in Rochester and are within travelling distance of here, the reason for saying this is because 5 of us ex-Royals have just had a mini reunion in Broadstairs, the 5 being myself, Danny Dean, Ernie Johnson, John Mathews and Syd Salter (lives in Orpington). If you remember any of the names and would like to meet up then we are making it a regular occurence, once a month, you would be most welcome. Also, if you are the Tiger Lyons who used to take part in Cross-Country running, then you will be interested to know that an old competitor of yours, who lives around the corner from me (I have just found this out and went round to meet him today) will be joining us. His name is David Bramble and he mentioned your name and I gather you are in contact with him. TIS
ReplyDeleteHiya Tis. I actually have a house in Crawley, although I live mostly in hotels during the touring season. I was actually picking up the tourists in Rochester. But thank you for your kind invite and I have spoken to Dave Bramble a couple of times. Yes we were in the same X country and Langlauf teams in the early 70's. Although the only thing that runs now is my nose. Best wishes Tiger
