Royal Dragoons postcards

Here is a small collection of postcards that I have to the Royal Dragoons. Most are from the Boer War - WW1 period. Thought I would put them here on the site for anyone to take a look.

  3. Hi Grumps, no, your eyes are not playing tricks on you! They are wearing the lanyard on the left shoulder. I have noticed this in most old photo's I have seen of The Royals from this period and I am as yet to find out why. My only thought is that perhaps The Royals were aways 'left' of the Line but perhaps were transfered to the 'right' of the Line when they went mechanised in 1940. I have read through what I have at home but can find no referance to it. Perhaps there is a Regimental expert out there who can help?

  4. Hi slingerjp, you are quite right, the royals were indeed formed in 1661 at St. Georges Fields, Southwark under the reign of Charles II. This picture is a bit of a mystery. The legend at the bottom does show the Monarch as Charles I so that is correct with the dates but the British Army wasn't formed until 1661 so not quite sure whats going on here.
    Nice picture though!!!
    All the best, John S

  8. Re the lanyard, it is all to do with the camera, Look at the young Royal with the ammo bandolier, it is over his left shoulder, it should be his right, Now look at the Vickers MG it should be belt fed from the left and not the right as shown in the picture. Just a thought I could be wrong!!!!!!
