Can you give me any idea when this was worn e.g. the cloth backing. The Royal Crest badge was superceded in 1948 with the Eagle badge but was the grey cloth backing worn prior to this?
in 1945 when the regt went to the Blue/Black beret they had the grey patch issued a lot of the grey berets were cut up to use as patches when they ran out they used blankets.my old pal still has his grey beret but wont part with it at the moment..im working on him

Yes,I clearly remember we had the grey backing when I first joined the Regiment,did'nt realize it could have come from Dereks worn out blanket though!!!
i still have my cap badge with grey backing.the grey backing was made of old blankets.and was never in short supply
